Bamboo Lab troubleshooting guide

Find your problem, see the likely causes and try the fixes in order. Most print failures on X1, P1, A1 and H2 series printers come down to a short list of causes.

Problem finder

What is going wrong?

Search for a symptom or filter by type. Each card lists the most common causes first.

Adhesion

First layer will not stick

The first layer peels up, drags around or never bonds to the plate.

Likely causes

Oily plate, wrong plate type in the slicer, bed too cool, skipped bed leveling.

Try this

  1. Wash the plate with warm water and dish soap, then avoid touching the surface.
  2. Check the plate type selected in Bamboo Studio matches the plate you are using.
  3. Raise the bed temperature by 5°C.
  4. Keep bed leveling enabled before the print.
  5. Use a thin layer of glue stick on smooth or engineering plates.
Adhesion

Warping and lifting corners

Corners curl up during the print, often with ABS, ASA, PETG or large flat parts.

Likely causes

Uneven cooling, drafts, open enclosure, poor first layer.

Try this

  1. Close the door and lid on enclosed printers for ABS and ASA.
  2. Add a brim in Bamboo Studio.
  3. Reduce part cooling for the first layers.
  4. Keep the printer away from fans, windows and air conditioning.
  5. Clean the plate and apply glue stick.
Adhesion

Spaghetti mess

The part breaks free mid print and the printer extrudes loose strands.

Likely causes

Part knocked loose, weak adhesion, missing supports, tall thin model.

Try this

  1. Fix adhesion first using the steps in the first card.
  2. Enable supports for overhangs and add a brim to tall parts.
  3. Turn on spaghetti detection on models that support it.
  4. Lower speed for tall, narrow prints.
Print quality

Layer shifts

Layers suddenly move sideways, so the print looks like a staircase.

Likely causes

Nozzle hitting curled parts, loose belts, objects blocking the toolhead.

Try this

  1. Clear anything near the toolhead path and inside the chamber.
  2. Fix curling and warping so the nozzle cannot catch the part.
  3. Check belt tension using the guide for your model.
  4. Try the silent or standard speed mode for the next print.
Print quality

Ghosting and ringing

Faint echoes of edges or text appear on the walls after sharp corners.

Likely causes

Unstable surface, outdated calibration, very high speed or acceleration.

Try this

  1. Place the printer on a solid, heavy surface.
  2. Run the full calibration including vibration compensation.
  3. Lower outer wall speed in Bamboo Studio.
Print quality

Elephant foot

The bottom layers bulge outward, so parts do not fit together.

Likely causes

First layers squished too hard, bed temperature too high.

Try this

  1. Use elephant foot compensation in Bamboo Studio.
  2. Lower the bed temperature by 5°C.
  3. Add a small chamfer to the bottom edge of your model.
Extrusion

Stringing and blobs

Thin hairs between parts or small blobs on the surface.

Likely causes

Wet filament, nozzle too hot, wrong filament profile.

Try this

  1. Dry the filament, especially PETG, TPU and nylon.
  2. Lower the nozzle temperature by 5 to 10°C.
  3. Pick the correct filament profile in Bamboo Studio.
  4. Run a flow calibration.
Extrusion

Under extrusion and gaps

Thin walls, missing lines or weak, brittle layers.

Likely causes

Partial clog, tangled spool, wet filament, wrong flow settings.

Try this

  1. Check the spool turns freely and is not tangled.
  2. Run flow dynamics and flow rate calibration.
  3. Dry the filament.
  4. Check for a partial clog using the next card.
Extrusion

Clogged nozzle

Little or no filament comes out, or the extruder clicks.

Likely causes

Debris, heat creep, printing too cool, worn nozzle.

Try this

  1. Heat the nozzle and push filament through by hand.
  2. Do a cold pull to remove debris.
  3. Use a hardened steel nozzle for abrasive filaments.
  4. Replace the nozzle or hotend following your model's official guide.
AMS

AMS fails to feed

Filament will not load or stops mid print with a feeding error.

Likely causes

Badly cut filament end, tangled spool, slipping cardboard spool, blocked tube.

Try this

  1. Cut the filament end cleanly at an angle before loading.
  2. Check the spool for tangles or crossed loops.
  3. Fit spool adapter rings on cardboard spools.
  4. Check PTFE tubes for kinks or loose connections.
AMS

AMS will not unload

The printer reports it could not pull filament back to the AMS.

Likely causes

Swollen tip, filament broken inside the path, friction in the tubes.

Try this

  1. Heat the nozzle, then retract the filament manually.
  2. Look for broken filament inside the tubes or toolhead.
  3. Shorten long or tightly bent PTFE tube runs.
AMS

Filament not recognized

The AMS shows an unknown or blank slot after loading.

Likely causes

Automatic detection only works with Bamboo Lab spools that carry an RFID tag.

Try this

  1. Set the filament type and color manually for that slot.
  2. Choose a matching generic profile in Bamboo Studio.
  3. Run flow calibration for third party filament.
Errors

HMS error messages

The screen or app shows an HMS code and pauses the print.

Likely causes

A sensor reported a problem, such as a clog, a fan fault or a feeding issue.

Try this

  1. Note the full code shown on the screen or in Bamboo Handy.
  2. Open the linked help article for that code.
  3. Follow the fix, then resume or restart the print.
Setup

Printer will not connect

The printer drops off Wi-Fi or does not appear in Bamboo Studio.

Likely causes

5 GHz network, weak signal, outdated firmware, router settings.

Try this

  1. Connect the printer to a 2.4 GHz network.
  2. Move the router closer or add a mesh point.
  3. Update the printer firmware and Bamboo Studio.
  4. Use LAN mode if you prefer to stay offline.
Maintenance

Unusual noises

Grinding, squeaking or rattling that was not there before.

Likely causes

Dirty rods, worn fans, loose screws, debris in the chamber.

Try this

  1. Clean the rods and rails following your model's maintenance guide.
  2. Wipe carbon rods on X1 and P1 series printers rather than greasing them.
  3. Check fans for dust or fragments of filament.
  4. Tighten any loose panels or screws.

Quick diagnostic checklist

Run through these six checks first. They solve a large share of failed prints.

  • Clean plate. Washed with soap and water, no fingerprints.
  • Right plate type. Bamboo Studio setting matches the plate on the bed.
  • Dry filament. No popping sounds, no fuzzy or rough surfaces.
  • Correct profile. Filament profile matches the brand and material.
  • Up to date. Latest firmware and Bamboo Studio installed.
  • Calibrated. Bed leveling and flow calibration run recently.

FAQ

Troubleshooting questions

Why do my Bamboo Lab prints fail at the first layer?

Most first layer failures come from an oily build plate, the wrong plate type selected in Bamboo Studio or a bed that is too cool. Wash the plate with warm water and dish soap, check the plate setting and raise the bed temperature slightly.

How do I stop stringing on my Bamboo Lab printer?

Dry the filament first, since moisture is the most common cause. Then lower the nozzle temperature by 5 to 10 degrees, make sure the correct filament profile is selected and run a flow calibration.

What should I do when I see an HMS error?

Write down the full code, open its help article from the printer screen or the Bamboo Handy app and follow the steps. Many HMS alerts point to simple issues such as a feeding problem or a dusty fan.

Why does my AMS fail to feed filament?

Common causes are a badly cut filament end, a tangled spool, a cardboard spool slipping on the rollers or a kinked PTFE tube. Cut the end at an angle, check the spool and use adapter rings on cardboard spools.
